More about this wine

Domaine Lathuilière-Gravallon represents a rich tapestry of family winemaking history in the Beaujolais region, spanning five generations since its foundational roots were planted in 1875. Managed by Cathy and Cédric Lathuilière, the estate expertly bridges ancestral know-how with modern, precision viticulture. The Cru Morgon is famously known as the iron fist in a velvet glove within Beaujolais, loved for its structure and ability to develop Burgundy-like complexity as it matures. Sourced from some of the estate’s oldest vineyard plots—with vines averaging an impressive 80 years of age—the 2020 "Vieilles Vignes" bottling is a stellar showcase of what ancient, deep-rooted Gamay can achieve. It trades casual, simple fruitiness for an intense, beautifully concentrated profile anchored by dark stony minerals, structured tannins, and a remarkably sophisticated, dark-fruited depth that reflects the stellar qualities of the concentrated 2020 vintage. Grape Varietal 100% Gamay (specifically Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc). > Note: Sourced from exceptionally low-yielding, hand-harvested old vines (80+ years). These ancient root systems penetrate deep into the granitic bedrock, which naturally concentrates the sugars, acids, and phenolics within the berries to create a wine of profound structural integrity. Region Morgon Cru, Beaujolais, France. (Grown on steep, south and southeast-facing slopes in the heart of the Morgon appellation. The terroir is defined by decomposed granitic sands, schist, and iron-rich clay soils—locally referred to as "roche pourrie" or rotten rock—which is directly responsible for the wine's characteristic muscular build and underlying earthy minerality.) Style Dry, Medium-to-Full-Bodied Red Wine — Powerful, Deep, and Structured. The winemaking reflects traditional semi-carbonic Beaujolais vinification utilizing whole bunches to elevate aromatics. To achieve maximum structural completion and dark color extraction from the old-vine fruit, the maceration extends over 10 to 16 days in temperature-controlled vats. Cédric Lathuilière employs a "pomace grill" technique during fermentation to keep the skins fully submerged in the juice. The wine is then carefully matured in older oak casks (demi-muids) to soften the natural grape tannins and expand the mid-palate texture without masking the pure, authentic expression of the Gamay fruit. Color A rich, brilliant, and deeply concentrated Ruby-Garnet color with dense purple hues extending to a clear magenta rim. Aroma The nose is wonderfully complex and layered, opening with a bold combination of wild woodland fruits, sweet floral notes, and distinct earthy accents. Key aromas include: Primary Fruit: Concentrated bursts of black cherries, ripe blackcurrants, and wild raspberries, mingled with sweet hints of kirsch. Floral & Earth: Delicate notes of violet petals and dried peony flowers, beautifully balanced by complex undertones of wet stone, forest floor, and wild thyme. Spice: Subtle, well-integrated hints of cracked black pepper, black tea, and a warm touch of baking spice derived from its gentle oak aging. Flavor On the palate, this wine truly shows off its "Vieilles Vignes" pedigree, hitting the mouth with surprising depth and a beautifully solid, muscular entry. Vibrant flavors of dark plum, fleshy black cherry, and bramble fruit dominate the attack. The mid-palate reveals excellent concentration and an engaging fleshy texture, well-supported by a lively line of stony minerality and a refreshing, food-friendly acidity. The tannins are tightly woven, fine-grained, and robust, providing the classic Morgon structure while maintaining a smooth, rounded mouthfeel across the tongue. The bone-dry finish is intensely savory and long-lasting, leaving lingering echoes of tart dark berries, mineral iron, and a hint of dark cocoa. Food Pairing The excellent structure, rich dark fruit, and refreshing acid tension make this old-vine Morgon an exceptional, highly versatile choice for hearty, savory, and rustic dishes. Classic French Fare: Coq au Vin (braised chicken in red wine sauce), duck confit, or pan-seared steak au poivre. Roasted & Grilled Meats: Grilled pork chops infused with rosemary, herb-crusted roasted rack of lamb, or a juicy venison burger. Poultry & Game: Pan-roasted duck breast served with a tart cherry reduction, or slow-roasted chicken thighs with root vegetables. Earthy Starters & Cheeses: Wild mushroom and wild thyme risotto, savory lentil stews, or semi-hard cheeses like Comté, Morbier, or aged Gouda. Overall The 2020 Domaine Lathuilière-Gravallon "Vieilles Vignes" Morgon is a serious, beautifully crafted expression of Cru Beaujolais that punches well above its price tier. This wine beautifully undergoes the transformation known locally as "morgonner"—where aging old-vine Gamay takes on the savory, silky, and aristocratic characteristics of a fine Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. The concentrated and sunny 2020 growing season provides this bottle with excellent aging potential. While it can be thoroughly enjoyed right now with a brief 30-minute decant to let the fruit open up, it possesses the structural integrity to evolve beautifully in the cellar. Serve slightly cool around 58-62F (14-16C). Peak enjoyment window runs from now through 2032.
