Tasting notes
Cassis, currants, smoky tobacco, chocolate, and graphite all define the 2025 Château Cos D'Estournel, a powerful, ripe, concentrated beauty based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot that's still resting in 50% new barrels. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with a pure, layered mouthfeel, integrated oak, and a great finish. It stays lively, balanced, and remarkably fresh despite its weight and richness, and I'd happily put this up with the crème de la crème of the vintage.
More about this wine
Château Cos d’Estournel, officially designated a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Classification, is arguably the most flamboyant and critically revered estate in the northern Médoc, routinely performing at First Growth standards. Founded in the early 19th century by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel—the "Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe"—the estate is famous for its striking, East Asian-inspired pagoda architecture, a tribute to the founder’s lucrative historic wine trade with India. Historically celebrated for producing the most exotic, opulent, and muscular expressions on the Left Bank, recent years have seen a stylistic shift toward greater precision, aromatic lift, and weightless power. The 2025 vintage represents an iconic milestone for the property. Benefiting from an exceptionally dry growing season punctuated by well-timed spring rains, the estate completed its earliest harvest in history (September 3 to 19). The resulting wine is a modern masterpiece of majestic proportions, combining the dense, velvety texture of a warm year with an astonishingly fresh, low-alcohol, and classically framed structure.
Grape Varietal
A classically structured, high-density Left Bank blend consisting of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot.
> Note: Reflecting the unique topography of the estate, the old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon provides the rigid, graphite-laced backbone, while the unusually high percentage of Merlot contributes a plush, velvety, and fleshier mid-palate.
Region
Saint-Estèphe AOP, Left Bank, Bordeaux, France.
(Sourced from the estate’s historic heartland of 55-year-old average vines perched on a prominent, gravelly hill—"Cos" translates to "hill of pebbles" in Gascon—separated from Château Lafite Rothschild in Pauillac by only a narrow stream.)
Style
Red Bordeaux Blend: Full-bodied, Intensely Structured, yet Remarkably Fresh and Aristocratic. The 2025 vintage was treated with a notably gentle hand in the cellar, utilizing cooler fermentation temperatures (reduced from 29°C to 26°C) and shorter maceration times to capture pristine fruit purity rather than over-extract heavy tannins. Aging in 50% new French oak barrels, the wine effortlessly conceals its immense concentration within a surprisingly elegant frame, registering at a very classical 13.25% to 13.3% ABV with a vibrant, chiseled pH of 3.68. It juxtaposes dense, gravelly power with a refined, cashmere-like texture.
Color
An opaque, brooding Deep Purple-Ruby with a pitch-black core and a bright, vivid violet or magenta rim.
Aroma
The bouquet is sophisticated, deep, and slow to unwind, evolving dramatically in the glass to reveal a classic Saint-Estèphe minerality wrapped in exotic spices. Key aromas include:
Dark Fruit: Intense notes of crushed blackberries, wild damsons, black cherries, and sweet blackcurrant jelly.
Terroir & Mineral: A defining, stony core of pencil shavings (graphite), wet flint, iodine, and burning embers.
Exotic Spice & Florals: Captivating hints of sandalwood, incense, cracked black pepper, black tea, lavender, and fresh violets.
Flavor
On the palate, the 2025 Grand Vin is grand, sweeping, and layered with a crescendo of flavors. It enters with an ample, velvety wave of ripe black plums and dark chocolate, which quickly moves into a tightly woven mid-palate defined by crushed stone, licorice, and savory Indian spices. The fruit is remarkably crunchy and energetic, supported by a dense, mineral-salty matrix. The structure is supported by an abundance of firm, gravelly Saint-Estèphe tannins that are exceptionally fine-grained, never feeling heavy or overripe. The finish is persistent and majestically long, fanning out with lingering notes of cassis, espresso, mocha, and a distinct maritime freshness.
Food Pairing
The wine’s robust tannic backbone, intense concentration, and crisp acidity demand rich, savory dishes centered around prime meats, wild game, and deep reductions.
Prime Cuts: Dry-aged ribeye steak grilled over vine cuttings, slow-roasted rack of lamb with garlic and rosemary, or a classic Chateaubriand with a bordelaise reduction.
Game & Poultry: Roasted duck breast with a spiced plum glaze, braised venison shanks, or wild boar ragù over hand-cut pasta.
Savory Accents: Dishes featuring chanterelle or porcini mushrooms, roasted truffled root vegetables, or an elegant beef Wellington.
Serving Tip: Best served at 15.5°C (60°F) to emphasize its fresh fruit profile and aromatic lift.
Overall
The 2025 Château Cos d'Estournel is shaping up to be one of the undisputed absolute triumphs of the vintage across the entire Left Bank. It has drawn enthusiastic praise from global critics during its early tastings, earning near-flawless ratings including 98–99 points from James Suckling, 96–99 points from Antonio Galloni (Vinous), and 96–98 points from William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate), who hailed it as one of the finest wines produced at the property in the last decade. It beautifully bridges the opulent fruit character of 2022 with the structured, classical freshness of 2016. This museum-grade Saint-Estèphe is crafted for a magnificent lifespan; while its velvety fruit will provide immense immediate fascination, it will require cellaring until at least 2032 to fully resolve its structural grip, peaking comfortably between 2035 and 2065+.
