Initially firm and dry, this wine blossoms quickly with its delicious fruit and penetrating acidity. Fine tannins sustain this black-currant and berry fruit along with the complex texture and structure. Produced from biodynamic grapes, the wine has great potential. Drink from 2026.
More about this wine
Château Durfort-Vivens is a historic, aristocratic estate in the legendary Margaux appellation, deservingly rated a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the celebrated 1855 Classification of the Médoc. The property traces its deep roots back to the 14th century under the influential Durfort de Duras family, later merging with Viscount de Vivens in 1824 to form its iconic modern title. Thomas Jefferson, during his ambassadorial travels through France, famously ranked it directly behind Margaux's elite First Growths. Today, the estate is passionately steered by Gonzague Lurton, a radical pioneer who transformed the estate into a shining beacon of modern Left Bank viticulture. Durfort-Vivens made history by becoming the very first Classified Growth in Margaux to achieve 100% organic and biodynamic certification across its entire vineyard. The spectacular, globally celebrated 2015 vintage represents a historic, watershed milestone for the estate. In a year that is universally recognized as an absolute triumph for the Margaux appellation, the property's deep biodynamic roots yielded berries of incredible concentration, delivering a majestic Grand Vin that perfectly marries immense Left Bank structural power with an ethereal, weightless floral grace.
Grape Varietal
An exceptionally high-density, Cabernet-dominant Left Bank assembly consisting of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot.
> Note: This remarkably high percentage of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon is a signature trait of the estate's finest gravelly hilltops, injecting a rigid, graphite-laced structural spine and extreme cellaring potential into the wine.
Region
Margaux AOP, Left Bank, Bordeaux, France. (Sourced from chosen estate plots nestled across the communes of Margaux, Cantenac, and Soussans, where vines struggle through deep beds of Quaternary Günzian gravel over a cold, iron-rich clay base).
Style
Red Bordeaux Blend: Full-bodied, Chiseled-Structured, yet Incredibly Fresh and Silky. The 2015 Grand Vin is a masterclass in pairing intense phenolic concentration with absolute, non-interventionist purity. Fermented carefully in temperature-controlled wooden and concrete vats using native yeasts, the wine was aged for 18 months using a precise program: 60% in new French oak barrels and 40% in specialized terracotta amphorae jars. This extensive use of clay amphorae allows the wine to breathe and develop its cashmere-like texture while preserving the pristine, crunchy character of the fruit. It delivers a striking architectural framework, wrapped in a smooth cloak of pixelated tannins and an electric, mineral-driven freshness.
Color
A beautiful, deep, and brilliant Ruby-Purple with a saturated black currant core and a bright, youthful violet rim.
Aroma
The nose is wonderfully fragrant, aristocratic, and multi-dimensional, immediately leaping from the glass with a breathtaking harmony of deep dark fruit and high-toned floral perfume. Key aromas include:
Primary Fruit: Concentrated crushed cassis, wild blackberry, black cherry liqueur, and dark plum pastilles.
Floral & Herbal: High-toned, classic Margaux signatures of fresh wild violets, lavender, red roses, and dried tobacco leaf.
Terroir & Spice: Complex undertones of liquid graphite (pencil shavings), cedar chest, dark cocoa nibs, anise, and a gentle hint of damp forest floor.
Flavor
On the palate, the 2015 Grand Vin is monumental, seamless, and stunningly precise. It opens with a broad attack of ripe cassis and juicy brambleberry fruit, leading into a deep, multi-layered mid-palate laced with bittersweet cocoa, fresh mint, and liquid minerals. Driven by its unique gravelly terroir and biodynamic vitality, a fantastic thread of natural acidity runs straight through the dense fruit, keeping the massive weight feeling perfectly energized, balanced, and fresh. The mouthfeel delivers a fantastic sense of pure, pillowy texture, supported by firmly structured but fine-grained, velvety tannins that coat the mouth without a hint of graininess. The finish is remarkably persistent, leaving a long, clean imprint of black tea, smoky cedar, and mineral-salty dark fruit.
Food Pairing
Its robust tannin matrix, rich density, and intensely savory mineral core demand the finest cuts of protein and traditional, elevated French cuisine.
The Grill: Prime dry-aged ribeye steak grilled over oak coals, a roasted rack of lamb with a rosemary-and-garlic crust, or thick-cut venison chops.
Slow-Cooked: Classic French Daube de Boeuf (beef stew with red wine), slow-braised wild boar shoulder, or a rich oxtail ragout.
Decadence: Wood-fired dishes heavily highlighting fresh black truffles, wild porcini mushrooms, or a rich duck confit.
Cheese: Hard, mature cheeses such as aged Comté (24+ months), mature Gouda, or extra-sharp artisanal white Cheddars.
Overall
The 2015 Château Durfort-Vivens is an absolute "triumph of modern viticulture," universally lauded by global critics as a historic execution that firmly cements the estate's return to the absolute top-tier of Bordeaux's Left Bank. It achieved spectacular critical acclaim across the board, securing monumental scores including a 95–97 point score from Antonio Galloni (Vinous), 96 points from Wine Enthusiast, and 95 points from James Suckling, who all praised its breathtaking completion, precision, and chiseled length. It represents a collector-grade investment built for the long haul. While its pristine fruit purity and silky texture make it an absolute thrill to taste today if decanted for several hours, this Grand Vin is structurally designed for decades of transformation. It has officially entered its prime drinking window and will continue to cellar with aristocratic grace through 2050+.
