Tasting notes
Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2022 Château Smith Haut Lafitte checks in as a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that was raised in 60% new French oak. Reminding me of a more elegant version of the 2010, it has a dense purple hue to go with a rich, powerful, full-bodied, sensationally complex nose of cassis and darker berries interwoven with woodsmoke, scorched earth, chocolate, and chalky minerality. Concentrated, deep, and layered on the palate with ripe, velvety tannins, it's a sensational, absolutely heavenly effort that will keep for 40-50 years. Along with the 2009, 2010, and 2020, this is one of the greatest wines to ever come from this address.
More about this wine
Château Smith Haut Lafitte, located in the historic Pessac-Léognan appellation just south of Bordeaux city, is a world-renowned estate classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves. Its history dates back to the 14th century, but its modern era of superstardom began in 1990 when it was acquired by former French Olympic skiers Daniel and Florence Cathiard. The Cathiards transformed the estate into a global beacon of precision viticulture, implementing fully organic and bio-dynamic farming practices, pioneering "stealth winemaking" tech, and creating an on-site cooperage to craft their own custom barrels. The historic, scorching 2022 vintage yielded intensely concentrated, thick-skinned berries with remarkable phenolic ripeness. This bottling represents an epic triumph for the estate—a magnificent Grand Vin that seamlessly pairs the signature, smoky, gravel-driven minerality of Graves with a lavish, texturally hedonistic dark fruit profile.
Grape Varietal
A majestic, structured left-bank assembly dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (64%), beautifully balanced by Merlot (32%), and completed by Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%).
Region
Pessac-Léognan AOP, Graves, Left Bank, Bordeaux, France. (Sourced from the estate's sun-drenched, south-facing plateau, featuring a deep layer of Günzian gravel over an iron-rich clay and limestone subsoil).
Style
Red Wine: Dry, Full-bodied, and Velvety. This Grand Vin is a textbook display of elite, modern Bordeaux winemaking built for decades of evolution. The grapes underwent an intense, low-intervention vinification using native yeasts in custom-shaped wooden vats, followed by an extensive 18-month aging program in 60% new French oak barrels crafted on-site. It is defined by its dramatic "smoky opulence," delivering a remarkably smooth, plush, and multi-layered mid-palate that hides a massive structural core of fine-grained, velvety tannins.
Color
Incredibly deep, near-opaque Ink-Purple with a saturated black core and a brilliant violet rim.
Aroma
The nose is "explosive, aristocratic, and deeply complex," unfurling with a gorgeous interplay of rich fruit and classic Graves typicity. Key aromas include:
Primary Fruit: Concentrated crushed cassis, wild blackberry, and dark plum liqueur.
Terroir/Savory: Distinctive, signature notes of gunflint, woodsmoke, graphite, and dried tobacco leaf.
Oak/Spice: Sophisticated layers of dark baking chocolate, espresso roast, cedar wood, and a high-toned hint of violet perfume.
Flavor
On the palate, the 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte is monumental, seamless, and hedonistically rich. It opens with a broad attack of ripe cassis and black cherry compote, leading into a dense, velvety mid-palate layered with bittersweet cocoa, liquid stone minerals, and sweet baking spices. Driven by the estate's unique gravel-over-limestone terroir, a beautiful line of natural acidity runs through the dense fruit, keeping the massive weight feeling perfectly energized and agile. The tannins are powerful but incredibly silky and cashmere-like, providing a luxurious frame. The finish is remarkably persistent, echoing for over a minute with sophisticated nuances of black tea, smoky cedar, and dark fruit confiture.
Food Pairing
Its rich density, velvety tannin structure, and smoky mineral core demand elite cuts of protein and traditional, earthy dishes.
The Grill: Prime dry-aged ribeye steak grilled over oak coals, a roasted rack of lamb with a rosemary crust, or venison chops.
Slow-Cooked: Classic French Daube (beef stew with red wine), slow-braised wild boar shoulder, or oxtail ragout.
Earthy Accents: Wood-fired dishes featuring black truffles, wild chanterelles, or an rich duck confit.
Cheese: Hard, mature cheeses such as aged Comté (24+ months), mature Gouda, or extra-sharp artisanal white Cheddars.
Overall
The 2022 Château Smith Haut Lafitte is an absolute "masterpiece of the vintage," universally lauded by global critics as a historical execution. It achieved near-perfection across the board, securing monumental scores including 97–100 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (which called it "one of the real triumphs of the vintage"), 98–99 points from James Suckling, and 97–100 points from Antonio Galloni (Vinous). Critics universally praise its breath-taking balance of glamorous, opulent fruit and precise, gravelly freshness. It is an uncompromised, collector-grade investment built for the long haul. While its pristine fruit purity makes it a thrill to taste if decanted for several hours in its youth, it is structurally designed for decades of transformation. It will enter its prime drinking window around 2032 and continue to reign gracefully in the cellar through 2060+.
