Tasting notes
This great estate in southern Pauillac, facing the Latour vineyard, is at the top of its game. In this release, the tannins are as impressive and dense as the black fruits. Together they form a harmonious ensemble, richly structured, concentrated from the many old vines in the blend, and very ageworthy.
More about this wine
Château Pichon Baron (officially Château Pichon-Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville) is one of the most storied and majestic estates in Bordeaux. Rated a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification, the estate was split from its sister property, Pichon Lalande, in 1850. Known for its iconic, fairytale-style chateau with turrets reflecting in a pristine ornamental pond, Pichon Baron represents the absolute pinnacle of masculine power, structural authority, and pedigree in the Médoc. Under the AXA Millésimes management team led by Christian Seely, only the finest historic, gravel-rich plots adjacent to Château Latour are used for the Grand Vin. The legendary, hot 2018 vintage yielded incredibly thick-skinned, concentrated berries. This bottling is a monumental achievement, epitomizing the classic, muscular Pauillac style that effortlessly marries iron-fisted power with a regal, aristocratic symmetry.
Grape Varietal
A majestic, structured left-bank assembly dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (78%) and completed by Merlot (22%).
Region
Pauillac AOP, Left Bank, Bordeaux, France. (Sourced from the estate's crown-jewel historic parcels on the Butte de Pichon Baron, sitting on deep beds of quaternary gravel which provide immaculate drainage and force the old vines to dig deep into the subsoil).
Style
Red Wine: Dry, Full-bodied, and Powerfully Structured. This Grand Vin is a textbook display of elite Bordeaux winemaking, built for long-term cellaring. The grapes underwent an intense, meticulous vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, followed by an extensive 18-month aging program in 80% new French oak barrels. Unfined and crafted with obsessive precision, it is defined by its massive architectural framework, dense tannin profile, and an unshakeable core of dark-fruited concentration balanced by a precise, mineral-driven freshness.
Color
Incredibly dense, near-opaque Ink-Black with a deep purple-crimson rim and heavy, slow-moving legs.
Aroma
The nose is "monumental, regal, and profound," unfurling with majestic layers of classic Pauillac typography. Key aromas include:
Primary Fruit: Concentrated crushed cassis, black cherry liqueur, and wild blackberry coulis.
Terroir/Savory: Distinctive, aristocratic notes of graphite (pencil shavings), cold iron ore, and fresh cedar wood.
Oak/Spice: Sophisticated layers of dark baking chocolate, espresso roast, sweet tobacco, and a whiff of violet perfume.
Flavor
On the palate, the 2018 Pichon Baron is immense, multi-layered, and astonishingly precise. It opens with a broad, multi-dimensional attack of ripe cassis and dark plum pulp, leading into a dense mid-palate laced with bittersweet cocoa, liquid minerals, and exotic spices. Driven by the immaculate quality of the 2018 Cabernet skins, a striking thread of gravelly freshness prevents the massive weight from ever feeling heavy. The tannins are powerful, muscular, and exceptionally fine-grained, creating a seamless, architectural grip across the tongue. The finish is remarkably persistent, echoing for over a minute with sophisticated nuances of black tea, cedar chest, and dark fruits.
Food Pairing
Its monumental tannin matrix, rich density, and savory mineral core demand the finest cuts of protein and traditional, elevated French cuisine.
Elite Cuts: Prime dry-aged Côte de Boeuf (ribeye) grilled over grapevine cuttings, pan-seared tournedos Rossini, or a roasted rack of lamb with a herb crust.
Game & Roasts: Venison loin with a wild berry reduction, roasted squab, or a classic slow-braised wild boar shoulder.
Savory Decadence: Wood-fired dishes featuring black truffles, wild chanterelles, or a rich duck confit.
Cheese: Mature, hard cheeses such as aged Comté (24+ months), Gouda, or a selection of artisanal sharp white Cheddars.
Overall
The 2018 Château Pichon Baron is a legendary vintage for the estate, universally lauded by global critics as a "modern-day classic" that sits comfortably alongside the historic 1989 and 2010 masterpieces. It achieved near-perfection across the board, securing monumental scores including a 99-point rating from Jeb Dunnuck, a 97-point score from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and 97 points from Wine Spectator, which praised its "gorgeous, fruit-filled, and graphite-driven finish." It is an uncompromised, collector-grade red built for the ages. While its impeccable fruit purity makes it a thrill to taste today if decanted for several hours, this Grand Vin is structurally designed for decades of transformation. It will enter its prime drinking window around 2028 and continue to reign gracefully in the cellar through 2055+.
