Tasting notes

Lurid violet color. Mineral-accented dark berry and cherry liqueur scents are complicated by hints of candied violet and licorice. Sweet, perfumed and expansive on the palate, offering intense boysenberry and cherry that tighten up slowly on the back half. Blends richness and energy smoothly and finishes very long and sappy, with velvet tannins coming in late.
More about this wine
Château Bonnet, with a history dating back to the 17th century, is a respected producer in the Beaujolais region. This wine comes from Moulin-à-Vent, one of the ten Crus of Beaujolais renowned for producing the region's most powerful, structured, and age-worthy wines. The term Vieilles Vignes (Old Vines) indicates the use of fruit from mature Gamay vines (often 50-60 years old or more), which typically results in lower yields but more concentrated and complex flavors, giving this wine a depth that often draws comparisons to its neighbor, Burgundy. Grape Varietal 100% Gamay (Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc). Region Moulin-à-Vent AOC, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France. The vineyards are primarily on granite-rich soils, which is typical for the Cru and contributes to the wine's structure. Style Red - Medium-Bodied, Structured, and Aromatic. This is not a light, simple Beaujolais Nouveau; it is an age-worthy Cru Beaujolais. It is vinified with a focus on extraction and structure, often involving some destemming and a longer maceration before aging in concrete or large oak barrels. Color Deep ruby or deep purple, reflecting the concentration from the old vines and the power of the Moulin-à-Vent Cru. Aroma Expressive and complex, a signature of the Gamay grape grown in granite-rich soils. Fruit: Dominated by darker red and black fruits such as black cherry, blackberry, plum, and dried red currant. Floral/Savory: Classic notes of violet and a hint of licorice or black tea leaf. Spice/Earth: Subtle hints of clove, cinnamon, pepper, or an earthy granite dust minerality. Flavor The palate is ample and fleshy with a lovely combination of sweet fruit and underpinning structure. Structure: Medium-bodied with a silky texture and a fine grain of present tannins that suggest good aging potential. Fruit Profile: Echoes the nose with concentrated flavors of ripe black cherry and stewed cranberry. Finish: Often described as long, energetic, and complex, with a refreshing line of acidity that keeps the richness in check. Food Pairing The structure and dark fruit of a Moulin-à-Vent make it versatile for heartier dishes. Poultry: Classic pair for roast chicken, turkey, or Duck Confit. Pork: Grilled pork chops, or cured meats. Beef: Beef bourguignon, or braised short rib with polenta. Cheese: Hard cow's milk cheeses such as Gruyère, Comté, or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Overall The 2021 Château Bonnet Moulin à Vent Vieilles Vignes is a testament to the powerful side of Gamay. The cooler 2021 vintage generally yielded wines of high freshness and elegance in the region. This particular bottling is an attractive wine with a fine perfume and a decent concentration that will benefit from a year or two of patience to allow the firm tannins to soften, promising to be an excellent wine for mid-term cellaring.
