Tasting notes
The 2022 Figeac is one of the wines of the vintage. Unfurling in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of dark berries and cassis mingled with hints of violet, pencil lead, mint and cigar wrapper, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with striking intensity and sweetness of fruit married with unerring precision and energy, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Abundant but exquisitely filigreed tannins lend a sense of classicism and proportion to a wine that might otherwise be flamboyant. As I wrote from barrel, it's the quintessential Figeac, testament to the late Thierry Manoncourt's vision to plant such a large proportion of Cabernet, and on drought-resistant rootstocks.
More about this wine
Château Figeac is one of the most historic and legendary estates on Bordeaux's Right Bank, with roots tracking back to a 2nd-century Gallo-Roman estate named after the Figeacus family. For over a century, the property has been passionately steered by the Manoncourt family, whose late patriarch, Thierry Manoncourt, revolutionized the estate's viticulture in the mid-20th century. Figeac represents a profound geological anomaly in Saint-Émilion; while the region is famed for clay and limestone, Figeac sits on three distinct gravel knolls. This unique terroir earned Figeac its historic elevation to the absolute pinnacle of the region's hierarchy as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A. The historic, blazing hot 2022 vintage marked the inaugural full release crafted in the estate's spectacular, new state-of-the-art underground gravity cellar. It stands as an epic, monument of the vintage, effortlessly matching Figeac's signature, high-toned Left Bank Cabernet structure with the voluptuous, sun-kissed opulence of the Right Bank.
Grape Varietal
An exceptional, highly unique Right Bank blend dominated by the Cabernets, traditionally composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Cabernet Franc (34%), and Merlot (31%).
> Note: This "Left Bank-style" varietal layout is what gives Figeac its legendary uniqueness in Saint-Émilion, pairing Merlot's plush fleshiness with the intense graphite, floral lift, and aristocratic longevity of old-vine Cabernets.
Region
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru AOP, Right Bank, Bordeaux, France. (Sourced from the estate's crown-jewel 40-hectare contiguous vineyard, characterized by deep beds of Günzian river gravel over an iron-rich clay and ironstone subsoil, bordering Pomerol).
Style
Red Wine: Dry, Full-bodied, and Majestic. This Grand Vin is a masterclass in combining seamless, modern precision with old-world cellaring power. The thick-skinned 2022 fruit underwent an incredibly gentle fermentation using native yeasts in the new gravity-fed oak and stainless steel tanks, followed by an extensive 18-month aging program in 100% new French oak barrels. It is defined by its striking "architectural symmetry," delivering a multi-layered mid-palate wrapped in a cashmere cloak of ultra-fine, pixelated tannins while maintaining a vibrant, mineral-driven freshness.
Color
Incredibly deep, near-opaque Ink-Purple with a saturated black core and a brilliant, neon-violet rim.
Aroma
The nose is "explosive, aristocratic, and profoundly deep," presenting a breathtaking, multi-dimensional display of fruit, flowers, and site-specific minerals. Key aromas include:
Primary Fruit: Concentrated crushed cassis, wild blackberry, black cherry liqueur, and dark plum pulp.
Floral/Herbal: Magnificent, high-toned notes of fresh violet petals, red licorice, sweet tobacco leaf, and a hint of dried mint.
Terroir/Oak: Distinctive, signature undertones of pencil lead (graphite), crushed gravel, dark baking chocolate, espresso roast, and a whiff of black truffle.
Flavor
On the palate, the 2022 Figeac is monumental, seamless, and stunningly precise. It opens with a broad attack of ripe cassis and black cherry compote, leading into a deep, multi-layered mid-palate laced with bittersweet cocoa, liquid stone minerals, and red licorice. Driven by the gravel knolls and the estate's new cooling cellar architecture, a fantastic thread of natural acidity runs through the dense fruit, keeping the massive weight feeling perfectly energized, agile, and fresh. The tannins are powerful but incredibly silky, cashmere-like, and fine-grained, coating the mouth without a hint of graininess. The finish is remarkably persistent, echoing for over a minute with sophisticated nuances of black tea, smoky cedar, and mineral-tinged dark fruit.
Food Pairing
Its rich density, velvety tannin structure, and intensely complex mineral core demand elite cuts of protein and traditional, earthy dishes.
Elite Cuts: Prime dry-aged Côte de Boeuf grilled over grapevine cuttings, a roasted rack of lamb with a herb crust, or pan-seared tournedos Rossini.
Poultry & Game: Roasted squab, duck breast with a plum reduction, or a classic slow-braised wild boar shoulder.
Earthy Comforts: Wood-fired dishes featuring fresh black truffles, wild porcini mushrooms, or a rich duck confit.
Cheese: Hard, mature cheeses such as aged Comté (24+ months), mature Gouda, or extra-sharp artisanal white Cheddars.
Overall
The 2022 Château Figeac is an absolute "masterpiece of the vintage," universally lauded by global critics as a flawless execution that cements its Premier Grand Cru Classé A status. It achieved near-perfection across the board, securing monumental scores including a perfect 100-point score from William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate), 98–100 points from Antonio Galloni (Vinous), and 98–100 points from Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider). Critics universally praise its breath-taking balance of glamorous fruit and precise, gravelly freshness. It is an uncompromised, collector-grade investment built for the long haul. While its pristine fruit purity makes it a thrill to taste if decanted for several hours in its youth, it is structurally designed for decades of transformation. It will enter its prime drinking window around 2032 and continue to reign gracefully in the cellar through 2065+.
