Tasting notes

The 2009 Cuvee Madame, composed of 100% Sémillon, is pale lemon-gold in color with a beguiling fragrance of peach blossoms, mandarin peel, jasmine and allspice with core of pineapple, lemon pie, peach preserves and ginger plus a waft of musk perfume. Very big, powerful and seductive with decadent richness and loads of spice and floral layers accenting the ripe stone fruit flavors, it finishes with epic persistence.

More about this wine

Château Coutet, designated a First Growth (Premier Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification, is one of the oldest and most illustrious estates in Barsac. The property's crown jewel is the legendary "Cuvée Madame," a micro-botrytis selection created in 1922 by the estate's former owner, Henri-Lucien Guy, as a romantic tribute to his wife. This ultra-rare, collector-grade bottling is produced only in exceptional vintages when nature grants the absolute perfect onset of Botrytis cinerea (noble rot). Crafted by selecting individual, completely shriveled berries primarily from two parcels of century-old Semillon vines, it represents the pinnacle of liquid luxury. The monumental 2009 vintage, widely considered one of the greatest sweet wine harvests in Bordeaux history, yielded a Cuvée Madame of breathtaking complexity. It is an extraordinary elixir that balances immense, rich concentration with Barsac's trademark nerve and crystalline acidity. Grape Varietal An elite, old-vine sweet selection composed almost entirely of Semillon (95%) and completed by Sauvignon Blanc (5%). > Note: The ancient Semillon vines provide the unctuous texture, deep honeyed complexity, and susceptibility to noble rot, while the splash of Sauvignon Blanc injects a crucial line of high-toned citrus freshness. Region Barsac AOP (Sauternes), Left Bank, Bordeaux, France. (Sourced from the estate's finest historic old-vine parcels rooted in Barsac's unique clay-limestone soils, which impart a lighter, more vibrant, and mineral-driven character compared to the heavier sand-clay soils of neighboring Sauternes). Style Sweet White Dessert Wine: Extremely Sweet, Full-bodied, and Luxuriously Concentrated. Cuvée Madame is a masterclass in opulent precision. The raisined, botrytized grapes are hand-harvested through multiple painstaking passes (tries) through the vineyard. The incredibly rich juice undergoes a slow, natural fermentation and is aged for up to 36 months in 100% new French oak barrels. It is defined by its staggering residual sugar levels and dense, nectar-like viscosity, which are flawlessly balanced by an intense, electric backbone of limestone-driven acidity. This prevents the wine from ever cloying and gives it an airy, weightless lift. Color Deep, luminous Intense Amber-Gold with shimmering copper-topaz highlights and exceptionally thick, slow-moving tears that coat the glass. Aroma The nose is "hypnotic, explosive, and infinitely layered," filling the room with an aromatic symphony of concentrated fruit, noble rot, and sweet spice. Key aromas include: Botrytis & Fruit: Intense notes of dried apricots, crystallized ginger, orange marmalade, honeyed figs, and yellow peach compote. Sweet Spice & Oak: Decadent layers of saffron, vanilla bean, toasted hazelnuts, white chocolate, and graham cracker crust. Fresh Accents: High-toned whispers of orange blossom, lemongrass, and a subtle hint of petrol minerality. Flavor On the palate, the 2009 Cuvée Madame is monumental, unctuous, and multidimensional. It opens with a broad, luxurious attack of warm apricot tart, liquid honey, and candied citrus peel, leading into a dense mid-palate packed with barley sugar, white truffle, and sweet baking spices. Driven by Barsac's limestone subsoils, a sensational, driving line of laser-like acidity cuts straight through the intense sweetness. The mouthfeel is incredibly smooth, supple, and oily, yet it remains remarkably light on its feet. The finish is seemingly endless, echoing for minutes with sophisticated nuances of saffron, caramelized pineapple, and a clean, salty mineral freshness. Food Pairing Its extraordinary density, high sweetness, and vibrant acidity allow it to pair spectacularly with rich starters, savory-sweet combinations, and decadent desserts. Classic Decadence: Pan-seared foie gras with an apricot reduction, terrines, or rich duck liver pâté. Savory Blues: Intense blue cheeses such as Roquefort, Stilton, or Gorgonzola Piccante—the saltiness of the cheese creates a flawless contrast with the sweet wine. Fine Desserts: Classic crème brûlée, Tarte Tatin (caramelized apple tart), lemon meringue tarts, or simple roasted peaches with vanilla bean ice cream. The Ultimate Luxury: Enjoyed completely on its own at the end of an elite meal as a "meditation wine." Overall The 2009 Château Coutet "Cuvée Madame" is an absolute "legend of modern sweet winemaking," universally recognized as one of the single greatest dessert wines ever produced. It achieved legendary critical acclaim, securing a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator and a 99-point score from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, which lauded its unbridled power, precision, and monumental longevity. It is an uncompromised, museum-grade treasure built to outlive generations. While it is a profound thrill to experience today with proper chilling, its incredible structural chemistry, high sugar concentration, and impeccable oak integration mean it will continue to evolve gracefully for decades. It will easily maintain its peak drinking window through 2065+.
