Tasting notes

The two sparkling wines should not be missed. They're both terrific examples of how good sparkling Vouvray can be. Both are 100% Chenin Blanc cuvees. Even better is the slightly richer, more honey and lemon-scented and flavored non-vintage Cremant de Loire. A blend of equal parts Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay aged for a minimum of 18 to 24 months in their cellars before disgorgement, this is a real beauty and a superb wine. Unfortunately, just under 100 cases are imported to the United States.

More about this wine

Château Gaudrelle, established in 1931 by the Monmousseau family, is a highly respected benchmark estate situated in the heart of the Vouvray appellation along the right bank of the Loire River. For nearly a century, the domain has built an elite reputation for capturing the absolute purest, most expressive facets of the Chenin Blanc grape. Deeply rooted in old-world heritage, the winery operates out of historic cellars carved straight into the area's magnificent "tuffeau" limestone cliffs. While the estate is globally celebrated for its still Vouvray bottlings, their non-vintage Crémant de Loire Brut represents a masterful execution of traditional method sparkling winemaking. Château Gaudrelle meticulously treats this sparkling cuvée with the same artisanal care as a fine Champagne, offering wine enthusiasts a sophisticated, texturized insider alternative. It trades simple, entry-level fruitiness for a style defined by crystalline orchard fruits, intricate lees complexity, and an underlying chalky precision that speaks directly to the soul of the Middle Loire. Grape Varietal 100% Chenin Blanc (or masterfully framed with a tiny, selective percentage of Chardonnay depending on the base-vintage assembly to optimize mid-palate roundness). > Note: Chenin Blanc is the undisputed star here, naturally imparting its signature high-toned honeyed floral complexity, a structural core of golden apple fruit, and an electric, life-giving natural acidity. Region Crémant de Loire A.O.C., Touraine, Loire Valley, France. (Grown in sustainably farmed, clay-limestone vineyards directly adjacent to the Vouvray zone, where vines tap into rich, porous Cretaceous tuffeau chalk subsoils). Style Sparkling White Wine: Crisp, Complex, and Artfully Structured. This Crémant is crafted entirely via the Méthode Traditionnelle (Champenoise Method). Grapes are strictly hand-harvested and gently pressed to extract only the premium, clean free-run juice. Primary fermentation takes place under cold, temperature-controlled conditions in stainless steel vats. Following the secondary fermentation in the bottle, the wine is transferred to the estate’s deep, cold underground limestone cellars where it undergoes extensive lees-aging for up to 24 months—nearly triple the legal minimum required for the appellation. This extended contact weaves an ultra-fine bubble structure and rich, bready undertones into the wine, which is finished as a beautifully balanced, dry Brut. Color A beautiful, luminous Pale Gold with brilliant pale straw highlights and an exceptionally active, persistent stream of micro-pinpoint bubbles that build a fine, creamy visual ring around the surface of the glass. Aroma The nose is wonderfully open, clean, and highly expressive, delivering a stunning balance of fresh orchard pickings and mature autolytic details. Key aromas include: Primary Fruit: Intense, crisp notes of crunchy green apples, fresh Bosc pear pulp, and lemon curd, backed by a hint of white peach. Floral & Herbal: Lifted, elegant signatures of honeysuckle, acacia flowers, chamomile tea, and wild lemon verbena. Autolytic Complexity: Comforting, complex top-notes of toasted brioche, fresh-baked biscuits, and a delicate touch of wild clover honey derived from its long cellar aging. Flavor On the palate, this sparkling wine hits with an immediate blast of mouthwatering, juicy intensity. It enters the mouth with a crisp wave of tart granny smith apple and fresh citrus zest, which flows seamlessly into a fleshier, more generous mid-palate rich with creamy pear nectar, white apricot, and a hint of ginger spice. The bubble texture behaves flawlessly—feeling soft, silky, and micro-fine across the tongue rather than aggressively biting. Driven by its pure limestone foundations, a brilliant, integrated line of vibrant acidity cuts effortlessly through the fruit richness, keeping the profile incredibly focused and carrying the wine into a long, bone-dry finish highlighted by citrus peel, a touch of toasted almond, and a mouth-purifying mineral chalkiness. Food Pairing The combination of serious fruit intensity, texturized lees work, and driving limestone acidity makes this Brut an exceptionally versatile champion at the dinner table. The Perfect Aperitif: Salty charcuterie boards, warm gougères (French cheese puffs), or goat cheese crostini with fresh herbs. Coastal Cuisine & Seafood: Fritto Misto (crispy fried calamari and shrimp), oysters on the half shell with a classic mignonette, or grilled sea bass with lemon-herb butter. Poultry & White Meats: Classic roasted chicken thighs with rosemary, pan-seared pork cutlets with a light cream sauce, or a traditional turkey club. Fried Comforts: Pair it like the sommeliers do—with hot, crispy fried chicken, pan-fried crab cakes, or gourmet truffle french fries dusted with sea salt. Overall The Château Gaudrelle Crémant de Loire Brut is an overachieving, highly sophisticated sparkling red wine alternative that consistently outperforms its accessible price tier. Highly praised by international wine publications and professionals alike for its impeccable balance and varietal truth, it regularly captures excellent critical acclaim—frequently securing steady 90+ point marks for its sophisticated mousse, pristine fruit focus, and authentic Touraine typicity. It represents an absolute sweet spot for savvy wine lovers looking to elevate their everyday sparkling rituals with authentic French luxury without a demanding price tag. It is intentionally built for immediate, refreshing enjoyment while its vibrant energy is at its peak; long-term cellaring is not required. Serve beautifully chilled at 40–45°F (4–7°C). Best enjoyed from now through 2030.
