Tasting notes

This is really something. Electric on the palate. The aromas are so complex with sliced fresh and dried ginger, subtle pie crust, tarte tatin and hints of nutmeg with some salted caramel. Toasted bread, too. Always subtle. The palate is full- to medium-bodied yet hemmed-in with a freshness and balance that draws you back. Savory and vibrant. It's full of energy. Spectacular. Fascinating. Symphonic blend of 2012, 2008 and 2007. 65% of the 2012, 25% of the 2008 and 10% of the 2007. Eight grand cru. Chardonnay 58% and 42% pinot noir. Disgorged February 2023. 10 years on the lees. 7g/L dosage.

More about this wine

Launched in 1959 by the visionary Bernard de Nonancourt, Laurent-Perrier’s Grand Siècle completely reimagined the concept of a Prestige Cuvée. While other historic houses highlighted a single exceptional year, Laurent-Perrier boldly asserted that nature could never provide the "perfect oenological year," but the art of assemblage could create it. Named in honor of the "Great Century" of Louis XIV, this masterpiece is uniquely produced by blending a triad of outstanding declared vintage years chosen for their complementary traits. To bring transparency to collectors, the house numbers each release sequentially; Itération N°26 is a historic monument for the house. It triumphed as James Suckling's #1 Global Wine of the Year, capturing a perfect 100-point rating. It blends the structural brilliance, tension, and power of iconic harvests into a singular expression of symphonic balance and timelessness. Grape Varietal An elite blend of 58% Chardonnay and 42% Pinot Noir. > The assemblage is composed exclusively of grapes harvested from 8 prestigious Grand Cru villages: Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Cramant, and Avize; Pinot Noir from Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy, and Tours-sur-Marne. Region Champagne AOP, France. Style Sparkling Wine: Dry, Medium-to-Full Bodied, Complex, and Vibrant. Grand Siècle is a masterclass in tension, combining autolytic richness with chiseled, mineral energy. True to the house style, all base wines are fermented entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with no oak contact, ensuring absolute fruit purity. It is constructed from a strict three-vintage blend: 65% from the 2012 vintage (giving fruit generosity), 25% from 2008 (imparting structural tautness), and 10% from 2007 (adding mature depth). Having aged for an extraordinary 10 years on its lees before being finished with a precise dosage of 7g/L, it delivers a seamless, silken mousse anchored by incredible freshness. Color A shimmering, brilliant White-Gold with persistent, remarkably fine, needle-point effervescence. Aroma The nose is "profoundly complex, aristocratic, and layered," presenting a gorgeous harmony between fresh orchard fruit, high-toned florals, and mature autolytic elements. Key aromas include: Primary Fruit & Citrus: Fresh peach, candied pear, clementine, and a zest of grapefruit pith. Floral/Herbal: Fragrant notes of honeysuckle, jasmine, and fresh mint leaf. Autolytic/Spice: Decadent layers of freshly baked bread, warm pie crust, tarte tatin, buttered toast, toasted hazelnuts, and a touch of nutmeg. Flavor On the palate, Itération N°26 is electric, majestic, and full of kinetic energy. It opens with a "vibrant and mouth-watering attack" of candied lemon curd, ginger root, and green apple, which transitions seamlessly into a dense mid-palate defined by a "silky, pillowy creaminess" displaying flavors of apricot pulp, blanched almonds, and salted caramel. Driven by its Grand Cru limestone origins, a laser-focused backbone of chalky minerality and racy acidity keeps the opulent profile tightly wound. The finish is remarkably persistent and long-lasting, leaving behind a sophisticated imprint of fleur de sel, smoky minerals, iodine, and fresh honey. Food Pairing Its profound autolytic complexity, fine-beaded mousse, and intense mineral spine allow it to complement high-quality ingredients and elevated, refined cuisines. Seafood Decadence: Turbot à la plancha, butter-poached lobster tails, seared scallops with white truffle, or raw oysters. Poultry & Veal: Roasted chicken with tarragon cream sauce, veal chops with chanterelle mushrooms, or sweetbreads. Earthy Accents: Dishes heavily highlighting shaved white truffles or wild mushroom risottos. Cheese: Mature, hard cheeses like aged Comté (24+ months) or Parmigiano-Reggiano, which beautifully echo the wine's hazelnut notes. Overall The Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle Itération N°26 is an absolute "masterpiece of modern Champagne winemaking." It secured an astonishing sweep of critical acclaim, including a perfect 100-point score from James Suckling, a 19.5/20 from Jancis Robinson, and 97 points from Jeb Dunnuck, who lauded its lacy chalk texture and refined elegance. It is a triumphant collector-grade sparkling wine that proves the immense potential of multi-vintage prestige blending. While its beautiful, pristine fruit dominance and fine mousse make it an unforgettable experience to pop open today in its youthful glory, its incredible structural chemistry will ensure it ages with aristocratic grace. It will enter its absolute peak drinking window by 2028 and continue to cellar beautifully through 2055+.
